"A Billion Options" indeed --NOT.

It's here: Windows 7 in all its glory. MicroSquish touts it as having "A billion options...", just check out the front page of their web-site. Too bad one of those "billion options" was not being able to change one's desktop background/wallpaper in the "Starter Edition", which ships OEM on many new "net-books" now-days. Here's MS's lame explanation (if one can even call it an explanation). Of course, they made sure to include very-conspicuous links for an "anytime upgrade" to a more expen$ive ver. that'll allow such. One of the first things that 99% of computer users (yes, even "net-book" users) do is change their wallpaper to personalize their machine after buying a new one &/or installing a new OS..... you know, the P in "PC". Even Windows 3.1 allowed such as that. It's ironic to note that the net-books with the locked-wallpaper-Windows7Starter are themselves available in almost every color of the rainbow --including some of the most HIDEOUS Pepto-Bismol-pink shades I've ever seen.

Windows 7 to be unleashed Oct. 22 2009

The muchly-anticipated successor to Windoze Vista (a.k.a. the mountain of BLOAT-ware of the century) is slated to be in stores on Oct. 22 2009. I've been using the Beta & RC ("Release Candidate") --64-bit flavors-- for a while now, and so far I've been well-pleased at how much faster and more efficiently it runs. Of course, it could be in part due to it being 64-bit. Anyway, even the beta version seemed to be more stable than Vista Ultimate (which I've experieced BSODs ("Blue Screens Of Death") with.... something I hadn't seen since the days of Windows NT Server 4). Anyway, it'll be interesting to see how the final release performs.

....Ever wondered....?

Any of y'all notice that Windoze 7 and Intel's "i7" seem to be comin' out about the same time? Guess both MicroSquish and Intel are hoping it's their lucky # during these economically-not-so-favorable times.

RDRAM: Anyone have any??

Any of y'all familiar w/ "RDRAM"? Seems it's a rather rare type of RAM for older (by today's stds.) computers (e.g., Dell Dimension 8200). I just recently acquired another hand-me-down computer from my Dad (yeah: a Dell Dimension 8200), and the RAM architecture is the weirdest I've seen: not only to the boards have to be in identical pairs, BUT any empty slots must be occupied by "continuity boards" as well! I guess this config. didn't last long because they were barely smart enough to build only a few. Anyway, if anyone has any spare RDRAM boards lying around, please give me a shout. I need a couple of 512Mb.-size (or higher). Muchas gracias in advance! :-)

BLOAT-ware continuing to evolve...

Well, it's come to my attention recently that [the great all-powerful software company out NorthWest] is working on a new version of Windows (imagine that). Windows 7 is the latest, the successor to Vista. As the "welcome to.." page hyperlinked above says, key features of the new version will include "faster boot-up and shut-down times" ---yes, that'd be a significant improvement over Vista, which takes nearly TEN MINUTES to boot up on my Lenovo StinkPad Z61m. Even after then, the hard drive light is almost continuously lit during the whole time I'm using the computer. I've tried "Ready-Boost" when using 4 Gig. stick drives, but that doesn't seem to do much, except for creating another cool continuously-flashing light on my computer, har har! Another thang they mentioned on the above-referred-to page is that they want to "ensure that Windows 7 will run on *any* PC". WOW! Good: then I can dig out my old Gateway 2000 486DX2 again (I've missed that computer, even if it was as large as a small filin'-cabinet!). I guess tryin' to run Windows 7 on my old Zenith SuperSPORT 286 lap-top might be askin' too much though....Who knows.
